[14 Easy Steps] How To Make Ring Light At Home?

Do you find your images and videos too dark? If you answered yes to that question, then you need a ring light.

The photos and videos you take will look a whole lot better and more professional when you use a ring light. Since working from home is common nowadays, you can use these ring lights for video conferencing during your official meetings.

The following is a tutorial on the ring light you use for almost any type of portrait work on 500px.  It’s not difficult to build, but a warning because you will be working with electricity, I recommend getting an electrician to build it for you or at least provide some guidance. You can easily end up electrocuting yourself if you wire something incorrectly, so please be careful and follow all safety precautions.

Materials Needed

  • Wiring for approximately 10 feet of household 14-gauge
  • Light sockets: 12 standard sockets
  • 24″x 24″ plywood
  • A light switch
  • 12 light bulbs (CFL or incandescent bulbs will both work)
  • Power cords
  • Wire connectors in a small bag
  • Zip ties
  • A bracket and spigot for mounting the light to a light stand
  • Electrical tape
  • Electrical box

Tools Required

To assemble the ring light, you will also need the following tools:

  • A jigsaw
  • A drill
  • Wire cutters and strippers
  • A screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • A box cutter
  • Measuring tape
  • A pencil
  • String

Follow these steps to assemble the ring light:

  1. Mark the center of your plywood with a pencil after measuring it. Place a mark 12 inches from the center.
  2. Your string should be attached to your pencil, anchored to the center of your wood, and two concentric circles are drawn. The outer circle should pass through the 12-inch mark. Ensure that the gap between the two circles is large enough to accommodate the light sockets.
  1. With the jigsaw, cut out your circles. One corner of the outer circle should be left intact to accommodate the mounting bracket and switch. It should resemble a teardrop with a circular hole in the middle.
  2. Mark 12 evenly spaced points on your wooden shape for the light sockets, and then drill a hole at each point. You will need a 7/16″ bit to accommodate four wires.
  1. Make 12 pairs of 8- to 10-inch black and white wires. Remove 34 inches from the ends of every wire. Bend the bare wire ends with pliers to form hooks.
  2. The wire should be threaded through the holes. Each wire’s ends should be threaded through adjacent holes. There should be two black and two white wires in each hole.
  1. Connect the wires to the light sockets. The white wires should be connected to the gold contacts of the light sockets. The black wires should be connected to the silver contacts. To ensure the wire stays secure, feed it onto the contacts clockwise.
  2. Wire the leftover white and black wires into your switch. The switch should have instructions on how to do this.
  3. Secure your wires with wire connectors, then tape them.
  4. Test your work by installing a light bulb in the last socket. Flipping the switch should turn the light on and off. Unplug your light and check your wiring if it doesn’t work.
  5. Unplug your light and zip-tie the wires in place once you know your wiring is working. Make small holes for the zip ties in your shape.
  6. Cut off the tip of your teardrop. This will make a flat surface for your mounting bracket. Zip-tie the switch and bracket in place.
  7. Install the light bulbs in your ring light and place it on a stand.
  8. Test your ring light by plugging it in.
